BESIX consortium reaches major milestone at Riga Central Station ahead of schedule

BESIX and its partners have achieved substantial completion of the southern section of the new Riga Central Station, five days ahead of schedule.

Design-and-build project

The milestone covers the station building, three passenger platforms and the adjoining public square. The works were delivered by BERERIX, the joint venture formed by BESIX, Latvia’s RERE Būve and Italy’s Rizzani de Eccher. Since 2019, BERERIX has been delivering the wider Rail Baltica Central Station design-and-build project, which includes the new 12,600 m² central station building, passenger platforms, railway infrastructure and a 1,056-metre bridge over the Daugava River.

On 26 August, the FIDIC Engineer supervising the project issued the Certificate of Substantial Completion for the station building, three passenger platforms and the adjoining public square to BERERIX and the client, Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas. Minor landscaping, finishing and completion works will continue until the end of 2026, ahead of handover to the client.

A defining new presence in central Riga

The completion of the façade and glazed roof gives the southern section of the station its intended architectural form. The building incorporates approximately 1,500 m² of glazing, alongside integrated safety and maintenance systems designed for Riga’s climate and the demands of a busy transport hub.

BERERIX has also completed the construction and landscaping of three new passenger platforms, with access routes and lifts installed at both ends. Architecturally integrated canopies provide shelter, while durable, slip-resistant surfaces are designed for intensive passenger use. Paving and landscaping have also transformed the adjoining public square. The works also included the installation of internal and external utility networks and engineering systems.

Reaching substantial completion ahead of the contractual deadline is an important achievement on a technically complex project delivered in the heart of an operational city and railway network. It reflects disciplined planning, close cooperation with our partners and a strong focus on quality. The station’s southern section now has the architectural presence that people in Riga have been watching take shape, while our teams continue the final works towards handover.

The Riga Central Station is not only a multimodal transport hub connecting Latvian citizens, it also connects the Baltic countries to one another and, in turn, to the rest of Europe. Part of a wider European rail connection

Riga Central Station is one of the most extensive and technically complex elements of the Rail Baltica programme, the new high-speed railway connection that will integrate the Baltic States more closely into the European rail network. Rail Baltica, fully financed through the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, is being implemented in Latvia by Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas, in cooperation with the Latvian Ministry of Transport, FIDIC Engineer FORMA 2, Latvijas dzelzceļš, the Central Finance and Contracting Agency and design supervision partner PLH Arkitekter.
