Contract awarded for redevelopment and renovation of Stationspostgebouw

On Friday 20 December, LIFE.NL, PostNL, Fosbury & Sons, the City of The Hague and SENS real estate gave the official go-ahead for the redevelopment of the Stationspostgebouw national heritage site on Waldorpstraat in The Hague. A construction consortium made up of BESIX and J.P. van Eesteren is to realise the project, together with technical services provider Unica. The design is by architect KCAP.

The development of this historical building is the first major step in the development of the area around the Hollands Spoor train station, the HS Kwartier, likewise a development by LIFE.NL. Over the next few years, the entire area (230,000m² in total), will be developed into a mixed residential and business environment which will bring new life to the area around the Hollands Spoor station and the centre of The Hague.

From mid-2021 onwards, PostNL will establish its new headquarters in the Stationspostgebouw. PostNL and Fosbury & Sons together will fill the whole building.

Rich history

The Stationspostgebouw has witnessed a rich history. Chief Government Architect G.C. Bremer developed the office in 1932. Construction began in 1940 but was discontinued because of the war. The building was then put into service in 1949. The Stationspostgebouw was Bremer’s last design, and its special qualities have earned it the status of a national heritage site.

The redevelopment will restore the Stationspostgebouw to its former glory. Both the history of the building and the new style of working will be reflected by the future tenants.

HS Kwartier, more centre for the city

The Stationspostgebouw forms part of the HS Kwartier, the area development in the inner-city harbour area Laakhaven around the Hollands Spoor railway station. This development comprises the Stationspostgebouw acquired by LIFE.NL, the Globe and the Ontwikkelplot on Waldorpstraat in The Hague.

The heart of this development will be the new square at Den Haag Hollands Spoor station. A high-end, bustling city square will grow up here, of a quality to equal Rotterdam Centraal and the Jaarbeursplein in Utrecht. This multi-functional urban development will include extensive residential opportunities and cover a total area of around 230,000m². Its aim is therefore to give more centre to the city, important components being the revamp of the public space and the restoration of Waldorpstraat as a green and vital artery for the life of this new part of the city.

About the collaboration between LIFE.NL and SENS real estate

The developer and lessor of the Stationsgebouw is LIFE.NL (an initiative of the Belgian partners LIFE and Gijbels Group), which is strengthening its position in the Netherlands through its collaboration with Dutch developer SENS real estate. Both parties are specialists in inner city development and complex real estate projects.
