Launch of the spectacular rehabilitation of the Huccorgne Viaduct (Belgium)

Rehabilitation work on the Huccorgne Viaduct, in the Province of Liège (Belgium), will start in August 2021. This project, which is the largest motorway construction site in the region for the next few years, will be carried out by BESIX and its partner Galère on behalf of SOFICO. It consists of a complete rehabilitation of the entire structure.

At a press conference held on Tuesday 22 June, the Vice-President of the Walloon Government and Minister for Mobility, Philippe Henry, and SOFICO officially presented the project.

Located on the E42/E25 motorway between Liège and Namur, a major axis crossing Wallonia from east to west, the viaduct carries an average daily traffic of 60,000 vehicles. Built between 1968 and 1971, the structure consists of two parallel viaducts, one for each direction of traffic, with a total length of 547 metres and a height of 60 metres.

The work involves several challenges. One of them is to minimise disruption to motorway traffic: thanks to an extremely precise planning, motorway traffic will be maintained on two lanes in each direction throughout the work. Some operations will be particularly impressive. This is the case for the replacement of the 72 beams of the viaduct, each weighing 60 tonnes. This operation will be carried out with the largest cranes currently available.
