Valfabbrica project enters final phase following major traffic switch (Italy)

The Valfabbrica infrastructure project in Umbria, Italy, delivered by BESIX in partnership with Donati, has reached an important milestone with the opening of the newly constructed tunnels to road traffic.

Commissioned by ANAS, Italy’s national road authority, the project forms part of the modernisation of the SS318 corridor, a strategic route connecting central Italian regions and improving mobility between Perugia and Ancona.

The scope includes the construction of two new tunnels and two viaducts, upgrades to existing tunnel infrastructure, and associated civil engineering works, including improvements to surrounding road sections.

This week, traffic was diverted through the newly built tunnels, marking one of the most significant milestones since construction began. The switch allows the project team to focus on rehabilitating the existing tunnels, including safety system upgrades, new lighting system, compliance works, cleaning and repainting.

The traffic diversion marks the start of the project’s final phase. Over the coming eight weeks, BESIX and Donati will complete the remaining refurbishment works, with the objective of handing over the fully modernised infrastructure to ANAS shortly before mid-November.

Once completed, the upgraded route will offer a safer and more efficient travel experience for the thousands of motorists using this strategic corridor every day.
