BESIX is making solid progress on a major infrastructure project in Gabon

BESIX is delivering, in partnership with Matière and MBB, a transformative infrastructure project commissioned by the Gabonese government. The project aims to significantly improve mobility in Libreville and strengthen national transport connections. The scope includes the design and construction of a bridge, two urban flyovers and four pedestrian footbridges.

Located near the Bizango public school in Libreville, BESIX and its partners recently completed the second pedestrian bridge. It comprises a 30-metre structure that aims to ensure safe crossings for students and residents while easing traffic on National Road 1. BESIX and Matière worked closely with the technical teams of the Ministry of Public Works and Construction to carry out this early-morning, high-security operation.

Beyond the capital, the Ebel-Abanga bridge is another flagship component of the project. It will replace an outdated single-lane structure from the 1970s. The new 200-metre bridge will feature two lanes and sidewalks, greatly enhancing safety and capacity on a strategic corridor linking Gabon to Cameroon and the Republic of Congo.

For the construction of this bridge, Matière’s Unibridge® system is being used, enabling rapid assembly of prefabricated elements. It consists of two 51.7-metre side spans installed by crane and a 71.4-metre central span launched from one bank - an efficient, low-impact method. A key milestone was the redesign of the foundations by BESIX’s engineering department, which adapted the original plans to the site’s complex geological conditions: micropiles on the right bank and driven piles over 30 metres deep on the left bank, currently being implemented.

The first footbridge was completed in November 2024, the second - Bizango-PK13 - has just been installed, and the remaining two will now follow. The construction of the first flyover will begin shortly and the second is in the final design phase, with work scheduled to start in 2026. And finally, the construction of the Ebel-Abanga bridge is in full swing and expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
